Film: Big Grey Man

Project: Short film for the mountain film festival circuit

Big Grey Man - created 05-10-2006

The Big Grey Man is a short documentary exploring the legend of the Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui, Scotland's second highest Munroe.

The film project was inspired by Affleck Gray's book The Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui exploring the accounts of hill walkers who have experienced strange occurances on the mountain. Drawing upon the shared experiences of local people who live and work in and around the Cairngorms the film attempts to shed some light on Scotland's most prominent mountain ghost story.

Working closely with the mountain experts from ScottishHills.com to develop the idea we took three trips into the Cairngorms acquiring the footage at different times of the year. The gruling adventures saw us trecking into the heart of the Cairngorms to the Corrour Bothy on an 8 hour trudge through 2 foot snow drifts and on one trip spending the night under canvas on top of the ghostly mountain.

The film won us a couple of accolades, the most notable being a first prize winner at the Fort William Mountain Film Festival and was the supporting film to Al Gore's environmental feature "An Inconvenient Truth" at the Outsider Festival in the Cairngorms in 2007.
